Subaru Recalling Legacy and Outback Vehicles for Faulty Brake Lines.

Auto manufacturer Subaru of America is recalling roughly 200,000 of its motor vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2009, including its Legacy and Outback sedans and wagons. The automobiles are being recalled due to the possibility that they have corroded brake lines.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) officially released the recall notice this past week, indicating that a product defect in the design allowed salt water to splash onto the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector. Brake lines have a tendency to corrode when continually exposed to salt water.

According to the NHTSA, excessive corrosion could lead to brake fluid leakage, resulting in longer vehicle stopping distances. This defect has the potential of greatly increasing the likelihood of car accidents.

Thus far, Subaru has not received any reports of auto accidents or personal injuries resulting from the defective product. The auto manufacturer is recalling the motor vehicles out of an abundance of caution.

The motor vehicles subject to the recall were sold in 20 states, predominantly in the Northeast and Midwest. The majority of the cars were manufactured at an assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

Owners of the cars subject to the recall are urged to return their cars to Subaru dealers for a free inspection, where Subaru workers will either apply rustproof wax to the brake lines or replace them altogether.

GM Recalls Small Number of 2013 Buick Encores for Loose Steering Wheels.

United States auto manufacturing giant, General Motors (“GM”), has reached out to a small number of 2013 Buick Encore owners regarding the safety of their vehicles. GM says that the steering wheels in these vehicles could come loose or separate from the steering column.

According to the notice issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall only affects 144 Buick Encores manufactured by GM. The vehicles in question were equipped with heated steering wheels and manufactured in December of 2012.

GM says that a steering wheel fastener on its new compact crossover vehicle, introduced back in January, may have been improperly installed during the manufacturing process.

At this time, no auto accidents or personal injuries have been reported stemming from the defective product. Those who purchased the motor vehicles in question have been contacted by GM and their vehicles are currently being inspected. The unsold models were taken off dealership lots and are also being inspected.

California Jury Delivers $8 Million Verdict Against Johnson & Johnson.

65 year-old Loren Kransky was recently awarded an $8 million verdict in his lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson (“J&J”). The verdict came after a Los Angeles, California jury determined that the health care giant knowingly marketed a faulty hip implant that was later recalled.

Kransky alleged that the metallic ball-and-socket hip joint implant was defectively designed and that J&J knew of its defects. Nevertheless, the company allegedly still marketed the implant to the public.

The joint implant involved at trial was sold for a period of almost eight years to more than 90,000 people worldwide before it was recalled by J&J in 2011.

The jury verdict is sure to have a significant impact on the thousands of similar cases that are pending against J&J for the faulty hip implant.
