5-Hour Energy Drink Linked to 13 US Deaths.

Officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) said on Wednesday, November 14, that 5-Hour Energy, a popular energy drink, may have contributed to the wrongful deaths of at least 13 people over the past 4 years.

The FDA said that 5-Hour Energy has been linked to more than 90 cases of personal injuries reported to the FDA, including heart attacks, convulsions and even a spontaneous abortion.

This FDA report comes just one month after the FDA announced that it was investigating another energy drink, Monster Energy, for its potential role in at least 5 other wrongful deaths.

The US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found in a recent study that energy drinks were blamed for more than 13,000 hospital visits in 2009 alone.

Halloween Projection Lights Recalled Due to Burn Risk.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) announced on Thursday, November 1 the voluntary recall of 3,000 Halloween Mini Projection Lights made by Atico International USA Inc. (“Atico”), of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The CPSC stated that the lights can overheat, causing them to melt. This poses a potential burn hazard to their users.

Atico has received two reports of their lights overheating, with one instance resulting in a burn injury.

The lights were sold for $1.25 at Five Below stores nationwide during September 2012.

The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the lights immediately and to contact Atico for a full refund.

Monster Energy Drink Linked To At Least 5 Deaths.

The popular energy drink, Monster, has been linked to five wrongful deaths and one non-fatal heart attack so far in the United States.

Although no allegations of wrongdoing, or claims that the product is inherently dangerous and thus defective, have been proven as of yet, reports do indicate that the victims in each of these cases suffered health issues after drinking the Monster Energy Drink.

Many are blaming the high levels of caffeine in the drink for the personal injuries that have been suffered. Although the FDA limits the amount of caffeine in soda to .02%, there is no caffeine limit for energy drinks.  Monster, which is sold in 24 ounce cans, contains 7 times the amount of caffeine of a 12 ounce soda.

At least one wrongful death suit has been filed, in California, as a result of the deaths. The New York Attorney General, in addition, has issued subpoenas to energy drink manufacturers as part of the state’s pending investigation of the energy drink industry.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating the reported wrongful deaths as well.
