The mother of a toddler was awarded $24.2 million dollars by a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana jury after her son, Ty’Kevion Kidd, suffered irreversible brain damage as a result of an infusion pump malfunction.
In March 2005, Ty’Kevion underwent surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation, in Jefferson, LA, to correct a congenital heart defect. An infusion pump manufactured by Abbott Laboratories and Hospira, Inc. was used during the surgery. The pump malfunctioned, however, by failing to deliver epinephrine into the body of Ty’Kevion, which caused a cardiac arrest.
The resulting lack of blood in the child’s brain caused irreversible brain damage.
The jury deliberated for an hour before awarding Ty’Kevion $24.2 million for past and future medical expenses and pain and suffering. The verdict amount was apportioned among the various defendants in the lawsuit, with 65% of the amount attributed to the manufacturer of the pump.
