Sunland Inc., a food product company based in New Mexico, recently recalled over 75 types of peanut butter and almond butter after the company’s products were identified as the cause of a salmonella outbreak at Trader Joe’s grocery stores.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked Sunland’s products to 29 salmonella illnesses spread across 18 states.
Sunland produces numerous products under various brand names, including a Trader Joe’s brand it manufactures and packages called Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter. That product was the cause of the salmonella outbreak.
Sunland elected to recall its other peanut butter and almond butter products, as well, because they were manufactured with the same equipment as the Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter. None of Sunland’s other products have yet been linked to cases of salmonella.
