Subaru Recalling Legacy and Outback Vehicles for Faulty Brake Lines.

Auto manufacturer Subaru of America is recalling roughly 200,000 of its motor vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2009, including its Legacy and Outback sedans and wagons. The automobiles are being recalled due to the possibility that they have corroded brake lines.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) officially released the recall notice this past week, indicating that a product defect in the design allowed salt water to splash onto the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector. Brake lines have a tendency to corrode when continually exposed to salt water.

According to the NHTSA, excessive corrosion could lead to brake fluid leakage, resulting in longer vehicle stopping distances. This defect has the potential of greatly increasing the likelihood of car accidents.

Thus far, Subaru has not received any reports of auto accidents or personal injuries resulting from the defective product. The auto manufacturer is recalling the motor vehicles out of an abundance of caution.

The motor vehicles subject to the recall were sold in 20 states, predominantly in the Northeast and Midwest. The majority of the cars were manufactured at an assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

Owners of the cars subject to the recall are urged to return their cars to Subaru dealers for a free inspection, where Subaru workers will either apply rustproof wax to the brake lines or replace them altogether.
