Valentine Wolsey of Nevada has sued Pfizer because of birth defects suffered by her child after she used the antidepressant Zoloft during pregnancy.
Wolsey was instructed by her doctor to use Zoloft during her pregnancy, but now her child is suffering from multiple congenital cardiac birth defects.
Zoloft and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants have been linked to birth defects. Wolsey alleges that Pfizer should have known that Zoloft could cause birth defects by 2005, when her son was born.
Wolsey is seeking compensatory and punitive damages on several counts in her complaint filed in court, such as negligence and failure to warn.
